Transition Academy

Description of Program

South Kingstown's Transition Academy is a post-high school program that focuses on daily living skills, vocational experiences, and community engagement. Participants go out into the community to experience real-world daily living activities, make community connections, and complete job explorations. Instruction is centered on the individuals' interests and experiences.
Participation in this program is dependent upon the IEP team's decision and completion of all high-school academic requirements.

Businesses and Partnership

TeamWORK

The Transition Academy works with local businesses to provide job exploration and career development. Students go to work one to two times a week with a job coach working a 2-hour shift. Our partners include restaurants, recreational centers, URI bakery and dining halls, the YMCA, clothing stores, coffee shops, consumer stores, and more. Students are matched with a job in their area of interest and a few of these businesses have gone on to offer paying positions. These businesses understand the importance of inclusion and the benefits it has for all involved.
