The South Kingstown Preschool (SKP) at Wakefield Elementary School, educates a diverse group of children, including those with and without disabilities or developmental delays. The SKP provides half-day preschool sessions for both 3 and 4-year-olds and a full-day classroom for 4-year-olds.

As part of the South Kingstown School Department, our program is aligned with the district Kindergarten curriculum. We have also established transition meetings with the SKSD school of entry when your child is ready for kindergarten. This collaboration between SKP and the elementary school makes for a smooth transition with a clear understanding of your child on day one of kindergarten.

ALL SK PRESCHOOL CLASSROOMS
  • Are staffed by an experienced, Rhode Island Department of Education certified teacher and paraprofessional.

  • Provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum in implementing the RI Early Learning Developmental Standards

  • Have a maximum of 15 or 20 children depending upon the preschool model.

  • Provide a multidisciplinary approach to learning through program-wide collaboration.

  • Include Social-Emotional Development (SEL) as part of the instructional goals for all students.

MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of the South Kingstown Preschool (SKP) to create a loving, nurturing, and productive environment, which respectfully embraces the value of each child, family, faculty member, and community partner. We maintain high expectations for all children, with the fundamental understanding that each child can learn, given instruction that is built upon his or her unique strengths and learning style. By committing to putting the needs of children first and pooling our resources as needed, we strive to assist each child in reaching his or her full potential during these precious and important early years.

WHAT SETS US APART
  • Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy services are embedded within the school day for students who require such as part of their special education services.

  • Our School Psychologist and/or Social Worker are available to work with children and their families

  • At SKP, we have access to a full-time school nurse/teacher.

Play is the primary means by which children demonstrate early learning accomplishments. We have created a learning community that promotes literacy, effective communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, civic responsibility, and the skills necessary for living and working in a culturally diverse society.

South Kingstown Preschool has participated in the BrightStars quality assessment process and SKIP was awarded  4 out of 5 stars. We were assessed across several quality standards and criteria including Health and  Safety, Early Learning and Development, and Family Engagement. For further details regarding this rating, please visit www.BrightStars.org.

Here at SKP, we work in partnership with our families to foster a love of learning.  We recognize the role of family members as crucial in their child’s development and encourage open and frequent communication.  Volunteer opportunities may be available within each classroom.

“…for children, play is serious learning. Play is the real work of childhood.” -Fred Rogers
