DLI Program Description

English SpanishWhat is Dual Language Immersion?

Our model is a second language (Spanish) immersion model that will provide literacy and content instruction in two languages (English and Spanish).

Dual language programs differ from traditional foreign language programs in the instructional focus:
-Traditional programs focus on language instruction as a subject area, typically at the MS/HS levels.
-Dual language immersion programs present information across content areas through the language.

What Does SK's Dual Language Program look like?

~ SK implements a "50/50 Immersion Model" - meaning the instructional time is half in English and half in Spanish. A Spanish-speaking certified teacher provides 50% of the instruction, and an English-speaking certified teacher provides 50% of the instruction.

~ Students leave elementary grades bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural, and can transition into a MS language experience.

~ Dual language instruction is  offered starting in kindergarten at PDES and WKES.  All entering K students are eligible to participate in the immersion program. Matunuck and WKES students would attend the program at WKES; Wakefield and PDES students would attend the program at PDES.

~ Interested families throughout the district can apply for admission.

~ This bilingual environment will celebrate cultural diversity school-wide and has the support of school administrators, teachers and parents.
