SALT VISIT REPORT…
In March 2008, the School Accountability for Learning and Teaching (SALT) team visited West Kingston Elementary School to help the school assess its educational program. A team of 7 educators from across Rhode Island visited WKES for 5 days to observe and interact with students, teachers, parents, and staff. The final report incorporates their findings and was released in May 2008.
The SALT report commended the school in several areas including the exceptional commitment of its faculty, staff and administration, the use of clear and consistent behavioral standards for students, and its high test scores in mathematics, fueled by a school-wide emphasis on numeracy. The report identified fluent and expressive reading, as well as, strong comprehension as key strengths of WKES students.
The SALT report also made specific recommendations regarding ways to improve student learning and teaching including providing greater and more challenging writing opportunities for students, and utilizing instructional strategies that meet the needs of all learners.
The SALT team noted that greater collaboration among the faculty would allow teachers to take advantage of the high level of expertise that is already present at the school.
The findings of the SALT team will be the focus of the West Kingston School Improvement Plan for next year.
VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION…
The West Kingston Faculty will host a cookies and punch gathering on the lawn of the school or the library if the weather is inclement, to say thank you to our hard working volunteers and PTO. We could not be successful without each and every one of you. Please join us at 3:15 on Tuesday, June 17th. Children are welcome!
BOX TOPS NEWS…
WOW! What a great year we’ve had. If you don’t think they’re worth cutting…think again. How does $996.00 sound?? Think what this money means to our school and kids. All you have to do is cut them and send them in. Keep cutting over the summer and put them in a ziplock bag in a drawer. Bring them in when school starts in the fall and let’s see if we can beat this year’s record! Happy cutting and thank you for helping.
PTO ASSEMBLY…
The PTO is sponsoring Magician, Greg McAdamsto, who will perform at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, June 13th, here at West Kingston. The assembly will be in the cafetorium for all students.
FIFTH GRADE PARENTS…
The summer reading for middle school will go home in the report card envelopes.
FOURTH GRADERS…
The reading lists for the fifth grade will be mailed home to you.
MUSIC NEWS…
There is a Band & Chorus concert tonight. The concert will begin promptly at 7:00 pm; Band members should plan to arrive at 6:30 (don’t forget music, extra reeds, valve oil, etc.). Chorus members need to arrive no later than 6:55 pm. If you arrive after the concert has started, please enter the cafeteria between selections. All performers are wearing BLACK (top) & WHITE (bottom).
The Chorus received a rating of EXCELLENT for their performance at the Rhode Island Music Educators Elementary Choral Festival. Congratulations for your outstanding musicianship!
