CARES NEWS…
Thank you South Kingstown! The Waldenbooks Book Drive for SK CARES was a huge success. Over 80 books for students in grades 1-8 were donated to SK CARES by our generous community. These books will be added to the books that are being purchased by CARES through funds from two grants, one from The South Kingstown Education Foundation and the other from the Small Cities and Towns Development Block Grant to provide new books for qualified students who participate in the SK CARES Mentor Program and Homework Clubs. Students from these programs who might not necessarily be able to afford new books for summer reading will now have some real treasures to keep for years to come! These books will be bundled and delivered by CARES volunteers to the homes of the students in time for summer reading. Summer will truly be very special for 50 SK students thanks to the generosity of our community.
ART NEWS…from Holly Harrington
The art room is buzzing with activity. Congratulations to Owen T., Rachel C., Aviana K., Katelyn A., and Jermaine V. These students have artwork displayed in the PS2008 Art Show at the University of Rhode Island, Providence Campus. This magnificent show features K-12 work from public schools and is open to the public from May 5-30th.
5th Grade Mural
The 5th graders have been working very hard to complete their mural. I am so proud of the students. The mural will be ready for viewing at the Art Show. A special thank you to Veronica Thompson and Melanie Barlow for helping out. Thank you to Annmarie Mahoney, Nancy Cordy, Karen Patrick and Kathy Giles for bringing containers for the paint.
Art Show
The Art Show will be on May 29th and preparation has already begun. A huge thank you to Veronica Thompson, Celeste Ferguson, Nancy Lenoce-Walsh and Leah, Melissa Berenberg, and Dena Gonsalves for matting the artwork and to Dave Brown for printing up name labels.
We still need help. We will be stapling the artwork onto large rolls of paper on Thursday the 15th and 22nd starting at 1:30 pm. We also need help setting up the show on Thursday, May 29th starting at 1:30 pm. Please see Mrs. Harrington if you can help. Any help is truly appreciated. Thank you!!

Popcorn Friday
Reminder this Friday we will be selling popcorn during school for 50 cents a bag. The kids will be able to enjoy this treat during snack time. If you have a child with an allergy, we will need the signed permission slip back by Thursday or we will not be able to sell popcorn to your child. The kids are very excited about this new treat!
Teacher Appreciation Week
We at WKES will be celebrating and honoring our fantastic staff during the week of May 19th-May 23rd. On Monday, the 19th, we will be having a breakfast and on Wednesday, the 21st, we will be having a luncheon. If you would like to help out by volunteering to make a special dish for either day, please let us know. A flier will be going home today in backpacks. Last year we had a great assortment of food and the staff loved every bit of it, so let’s show them again how much we appreciate all they do for our children every day. Contact Tricia Angeli at triciaangeli@cox.net or Lisa DeMaria at jewelrydesignsbylisa@cox.net.
Final PTO Meeting
Our last PTO meeting will be on Wednesday, May 21st at 7 pm in the school library. We will be voting on board members for next year, so we would love to see some new faces. We are going to be in need of a Secretary and Treasurer. Please won’t you help us out? The PTO is a lot of fun and it does a lot of great things for all of our kids at WKES. If you are unsure of what the responsibilities might entail, please contact Triciaangeli@cox.net. This really is a great school with a lot of wonderful kids. All parents are invited and it is free (imagine that, nothing is free nowadays!) We are always looking for neat ideas to enhance our school. Hope to see a lot of you at the meeting!
Art Show/Book Fair/Ice Cream Social
Our annual Spring Art Show, Ice Cream Social and Book Fair will be held on Thursday, May 29th, 6-8 pm at the school. Volunteers are needed to help out with this event. More info in backpacks soon.
School Store
The School Store has raised a whopping $450 for fifth grade graduation! I wanted to thank the hard work and dedication of the volunteer parents who made this happen – Melanie Barlow, Chris Camara and Linda Forrester. They were a fantastic bunch and they know a monkey head eraser from a trendy traffic cone flashlight!
We all wanted to thank the children for making the School Store such an enjoyable activity. Each week, they were a treat – counting out their change, oohing and aahing over the newest merchandise, and making sure they were entered for the raffle! They made every Friday memorable and we had a ball.
We will continue to hold the School Store until we run out of inventory. The money raised in the remaining weeks will be used to stock the store with new goodies for next year.
Thanks to all – the volunteers and the children – who made it a successful year for our School Store!!
