READING WEEK 2008…
by Celeste Ferguson
Thanks to all of the students, parents and teachers for making Reading Week such a great success.  The sunglasses were cool, the jogging suits were sporty, the hats were fancy, the p.j.’s were comfy, the mixed-up clothes were funny!  We collected about 1,500 books for the Book Swap.  The classroom doors were amazing.  Thanks to Karen Patrick for the trivia questions.  A special thanks to the PTO for donating new books to every student from Scholastic Books, and to Tony Santucci for making the beautiful tee shirts that were raffled off.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION…
from Mrs. Shumate
The Myachis have arrived.  We got a “real deal” with this order.  The company was out of the single Myachis that they sell in bulk for $2.50.  In place of the single Myachis, they sent us the Myachis with the finger rings that are sold in stores for $7.  What a deal, a $7 Myachi for $2.50!!  I will be placing one more order on Friday…..no guarantees on this order as far as what Myachis we might receive!!!
Myachis will be handed out Thursday or Friday to those who ordered their Myachi before vacation.  We will be putting each child’s initials on their Myachi.
MYACHI RULES!!
MYACHIS ARE FUN, LET’S KEEP THEM THAT WAY!
1. Myachis may be brought to school to use, but only at recess.  If any adult sees a student using a Myachi in the building, the Myachi will be taken away for a week and the child can claim the Myachi from Mrs. Nettik in a week’s time.
2. Myachis may not be used on the bus.  Myachis must be kept in a backpack or a pocket on the bus.
3. If a student uses a Myachi in a dangerous way (throws it hard at someone, etc.) the Myachi will be taken away and the child can claim his/her Myachi from Mrs. Nettik on the last day of school.
4. If the Myachi lands on the roof of the school, Mr. Gould will retrieve anything on the roof on the last day of school and you can claim your Myachi from Mrs. Nettik on that day.
Thank you!!!

PTO NEWS…

The next PTO meeting is scheduled for today, April 23rd at 3:15 in the West Kingston library.  Please bring a friend to the meeting as we need new faces to help plan important events for our children. SUMMER BRIDGE ACTIVITIES BOOKS…
Do you know that over a summer vacation, students can lose up to 80% of what they learned in school?  The Award-Winning Summer Bridge Activities series helps children maintain and extend scholastic and reading skills while they are away from school!  Sample books are available in the office for you to look over.
The deadline for ordering is May 2nd.

C.A.R.E.S. CARES ABOUT READING…
How do we learn to read?  For many of us, as young children, we were read to by our parents from beautiful family books that were passed down from parent to child, sibling to sibling.  These books have become family treasures and will be read again and again.  Thanks to the South Kingstown CARES Book Club, 50 SK students who might not be able to afford such treasures will be given brand new books for their summer reading.
This past school year, CARES has been fortunate to have received two grants to create a Book Club; and beginning this week at Waldenbooks in the Wakefield Mall, the CARES Book Club will be the recipient of the Waldenbooks Book Drive.
The Book Club recipients will be some of the students who participate in the CARES after-school homework clubs and mentor programs.  Grants from the SK Education Foundation and The Small Cities Community Development Block Grant and the Waldenbooks Book Drive will enable CARES to purchase new books for 50 students who may not have been able to afford new books.  These books have been chosen specifically for each student by their reading teachers and librarians to be appropriate reading for each student, matching their reading level and interests.  The books will be delivered to the students by CARES volunteers before the end of the school year.  Students will be encouraged to read these books and submit an entry (a book report, drawing or other creative entry about the books they have read) to the CARES Book Club Journal.
Anyone interested in purchasing a treasure for a child can participate in the Waldenbooks Drive at the Wakefield Mall, Waldenbooks, 160 Old Tower Hill Road, Wakefield, phone 783-0554.  The drive will continue through May 3rd.
