BATTLE OF THE BOOKS…
Battle of the Books is a fun collaboration between the public and school
librarians for 4th grade students -- read 10 books on the list of 35 and participate
in the “battle” on April 12th at the High School. Battle
fact sheets will be going home with all 4th graders. Books are available in
the school and public libraries. This is meant to be fun and to encourage
students to visit the public libraries -- participation is optional and voluntary. Library
grades are not based on participation.
READING WEEK…
Reading Week is coming April 9-13. Start sending in your gently
used books for our annual Book Swap. Check the notice that was
sent home on Tuesday about the exciting events.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, April 10th at 3:15 pm in the
Library. Babysitting will be provided. Please take
a few minutes to join us and participate in planning fun events for your
child’s school. All are welcome. You are already a
member as a parent of a child in WKES. Please join in!
If you have an older child who is in need of
community service hours and would like to babysit at this
meeting, please e-mail Nancy Santucci at nasanta@cox.net.
YOU would be perfect to work on the PTO board!!!!! Yes, YOU! Nominations will
take place at this meeting and elections at the May
meeting. Please consider sharing your time
and talents on the PTO board as a way to help create great memories for
your child. New, fresh ideas keep activities fun and exciting for
the kids. You have great ideas and would be a great addition
to the board. Consider job sharing with a friend. It’s
not hard and others will show you what needs to be done. NOW
is the time for you to make a difference!
Questions of the roles of board members? Want to know more about
how you can help? Contact Nancy at nasanta@cox.net.

Chinese Cultural Visit to South Kingstown
April 11 and 12
Public Presentation at 6:00 PM {Note new time!}
on
Wednesday, April 11
On April 11 and 12 South Kingstown will host visitors from China who
will provide an introduction to Chinese Culture. The visit is part
of the district’s decision to host a Chinese guest teacher, leading
to the introduction of Chinese culture and language into the district’s
curriculum. In response to the growing economic relationship between
the United States and China, the need for stronger cultural ties between
the countries has been recognized. The University of Rhode Island
recently announced the creation of a Confucius Institute and several
local high schools are adding or considering Mandarin language instruction.
On Wednesday evening, April 11, a public presentation will take place
in the Library of South Kingstown High School beginning at 7:00 PM. A
presentation on Chinese history, geography, cultural traditions, and
modern development will also include a sampling of Chinese arts, such
as calligraphy, painting, and folk music. A question and answer
period will follow. On Thursday, April 12, there will be a similar
presentation to all sixth grade students in both middle schools, followed
by demonstration lessons.
The public is encouraged to attend the April 11 Presentation. For
further information contact Robert Hicks or Mary Kelley at 360-1300
