REPORT NIGHT…
Report Night & Curriculum  Sharing
March 27, 6-7:00 pm
Make plans now to attend West Kingston School’s Report Night & Curriculum Sharing on Tuesday, March 27, 6:00-7:00 pm.
On this evening we will present our school NECAP data and students will become your teachers to help you experience learning as they do.  This is an evening for parents and invited students to become engaged in Reading, Math, Science, Writing and other subject areas.  Unfortunately, there is not enough room for all students to attend on this evening.  Each teacher will be asking a few students to participate as instructors for this interesting evening.
We hope you will be able to attend.

NECAP ASSESSMENT RESULTS…
Families will be receiving the NECAP Student Report – Fall 2006 for each child who was in 3rd, 4th or 5th grade in October.  These will all come in one family envelope mailed from West Kingston School.  The report will indicate the achievement level of the student in reading and math and 5th grade students’ writing as well.
    Achievement levels are:
4 – Proficient with Distinction
3 – Proficient
2 – Partially Proficient
1 – Substantially Below Proficient
Information is also provided showing how your child’s achievement level compares to other students in the district and state.
If you have questions about interpreting the scores, please contact your child’s teacher or me.  The NECAP tests were given in October 2006.
Nancy Nettik, Principal

DAFFODIL ORDERS…
Thank you to all who ordered daffodils for the American Cancer Society.  They will be delivered March 19th or 20th and will be sent home with your child.  We collected $860 for this good cause.

STUDENT NEWS…
Mrs. McGrath’s 5th grade class is doing a campaign for Caring for the Soldiers.  Each week there will be a different theme.  This week’s theme is personal hygiene.  Here are a few items we will need to keep the soldiers nice and clean:

  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Soap
  • Shaving cream
  • Disposable razors
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes
  • Powder for body and feet

Take it to room 106 (Mrs. McGrath’s class).  Thank you for helping our soldiers.

MUSIC NEWS…
Musica Dolce, a chamber orchestra based in South County, will perform a children’s concert on Thursday, March 22nd, at the West Kingston Elementary School.  They will perform a new piece written by Paul Rosenbloom of Westerly called the Leafy Sea Dragon.  It features violin solo with orchestra.  Also, included in the program is works by Copland, Mozart, Anderson & Saint Saens.
Any child who brings in a homemade instrument will be invited to play along with the orchestra in the Toy Symphony.  Please encourage your child to create an instrument for this event.  Homemade instruments should be brought to school for this event on March 22nd.

More Music News…
Many of the ORCHESTRA and BAND members are preparing for the Performance Festival at Broad Rock on April 10.  Any student who is planning to attend the Performance Festival is invited to perform at a Recital Night at the True Brew Café in Wakefield on Tuesday, April 3, between the hours of 6-8 pm.  Info will be distributed next week for anyone interested in attending.

Family Pasta Supper
***Save the date—April 11th***
Plans are underway for a West Kingston Family Pasta Supper and Basket Raffle.  Watch the newsletter for more details on this great  night.  More details will be discussed at the PTO meeting next Tuesday, March 13th.  Thanks to Meshelle Chabot for chairing this event.

CHARACTER ED…
The following students were the first to receive the “Caring Heart” award:  Joseph S., Nicole M., Payton C. (go Mrs. Colombino’s class!), Stephanie B., Ryan F., and Mrs. Cowger’s whole class (WOW!).  A special thanks to Mrs. Cowger’s whole class for their super efforts to work together!

SCHOOL CLASS HOURS…
8:40-3:05
It is very important that all students arrive on time for school.  Students are considered tardy if they are not in their classroom by 8:45.  Students should arrive between 8:30 and 8:40.
Many students are being brought to school after 8:40.  This impacts the learning of the whole class, not only the tardy student.
