Please note:  Due to our special performance by the Kaleidescope Theater on Friday, the Student Recognition Assemblies and Spirit Day will be on March 2nd, instead of Feb. 16.  Spirit Day on March 2nd will be “pajama day”.  Wear your PJ’s and enjoy a great book!

We have received the school summary data from the Oct 2006 NECAP tests and West Kingston School once again is a High Performing SchoolIndividual student reports will be available soon and will be mailed home.
 
FOOD FOR JONNYCAKE CENTER
A reminder that we are still collecting items such as boxes of cereal, juices, baked beans, jars of spaghetti sauce or canned spaghetti or ravioli.  Please send the much needed items to the office.  Thank you!

DAFFODIL ORDERS…
A reminder for the American Cancer Society’s Daffodil Days, coming our way for the first week of spring.  Everyone’s tired of winter by now, so get ready for spring by ordering a bouquet of beautiful daffodils or a Bear and a Bunch to support the American Cancer Society.  A bouquet is just $7, a Bear and a Bunch $25, or $20 for a Gift of Hope, to support the fight against cancer while giving bouquets of daffodils to cancer patients in our community.

PTO NEWS…
After School Art Club
The second class of the February session will be held after vacation due to the snow day on 2/14.  Class will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 28th from 3:05-4 pm.  Prompt pick up is appreciated.  This month’s theme is Landscape Design.

Look for a backpack flyer coming home soon for the registration of the next session.

Yearbook
Our yearbook is being assembled and your photos are needed.    Thanks to Mary Daly and Deb Sprague for their dedication to this project.  The deadline for photo submission is approaching, so get yours in soon.  Digital photos can be e-mailed to Deb Sprague at michaelsprague@cox.net.   Thanks to those who recently sent in photos!

PTO Meeting
Thanks to all who attended our meeting this month and special thanks to our middle school volunteer babysitters and to Tricia Angeli for supervising babysitting in the gym.  Our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 13th at 7 pm.

Matty Hatty Day
    We’ll be celebrating Matty Hatty Day – a fundraiser for the Matthew Siravo Memorial Foundation on Feb. 28th  at 8:50 am.  The students will dance for 10 minutes in the hall outside their classroom.  The students can wear a hat while they’re dancing in honor of Matty.   This foundation was established for Epilepsy research in honor of a 5 yr old South Kingstown boy who died from complications due to epilepsy.  The area children wear hats and dance in celebration of Matthew’s birthday.  Pledges they collect are donated to the foundation.
    Pledge envelopes and flyers were sent home this week.  Please send yours in on the day of the event when you wear your silly hat for a great cause.
    Thanks to Celeste Ferguson and Tonia Hassell for chairing this activity.

Box Tops  for Education
We are pleased to announce that we’ve just received a check for $781 from BoxTops for Education!  Please continue to clip and send them in.  They certainly do add up!!  Thanks to Holly Foley for her continued efforts on this project.  Please send  yours in via backpack express to the office.  Thanks to all who have been clipping!

Cultural Arts Assembly
The PTO will sponsor another cultural arts assembly this Friday, 2/16.  The Kaleidescope Theatre will present “I’m Special” to all WK students at 9 & 10 am performances.  Thanks to Marybeth McGreen for continuing to schedule great programs.

ART NEWS…
Congratulations to Hannah L., Abby H., Bridget M., Matthew J., Lea N., and Alexa P.  These students have artwork in the 23rd Annual Children’s and 21st Young Adults’ Art Exhibition at the Hera Gallery in Wakefield.  This is a wonderful show, and the work will be on display until March 3.  The Hera Gallery hours are Weds.-Fri., 1-5 pm, Sat. 10-4 pm.  Please check out the great artwork!

HAZARD PRESCHOOL…
    The School Department has announced openings in the SK Inclusive Preschool Program for the 2007-2008 school year.   This program was originally designed to serve SK preschool children with special needs.  It is now an inclusive program available to all SK preschool children.  It is located at the Hazard School.
    Children applying for the program must be SK residents between the ages of 3 and 5, and must successfully complete a Child Outreach Screening.  A monthly tuition is charged for all children accepted.  There are scholarships available for families that qualify.  Parent transportation is required to and from school.  Children must be toilet trained before their entrance into school.
    Child Outreach Screening will take place Mar 2 and Mar 16.  A lottery, including all eligible children, will take place on March 30th.

Please Note:
Appointments are 45 minutes long and may be made at the following times:
9:00 am/9:45 am/10:30 am/11:15 am/1:15 pm/2:00 pm

Kindergarten Registration and Screening will take place at the Neighborhood Guild located at 325 Columbia Street.

Please call the SK School Dept at 360-1300 extension 1307 or 1308 to schedule your appointment.

*Child must be age 5 by September 1, 2007*

At the time of registration, please bring:

  1. Child’s birth certificate.  No copies please.
  2. Proof of residency (may be in the form of a current mortgage payment, lease, rental payment, utility bill or tax bill).
  3. A certified copy of current immunizations, dates must include day, month, year of each dose administered and must be signed by physician or his/her designee.
  4. You will not be able to register your child if you do not bring their up-do-date immunization records with you.
  5. The school nurse will inform you about boosters that are needed.
  6. If your child had a 5-year physical exam, please obtain a form from the school, have it completed by your physician and bring it in the day of registration.
  7. If there are custody/guardian issues, please bring the appropriate paperwork.
