FROM THE NURSE…
As you know, the Rhode Island Dept of Health
is investigating an outbreak of mycoplasma pneumoniae infection at schools
in Warwick, Coventry and West Warwick. I just wanted to provide
you with information on this infection. Mycoplasma infection is
a respiratory illness caused by a bacteria called Mycoplasma pneumonia. It
is spread through contact with droplets from the nose and throat of infected
people from coughing or sneezing. Symptoms include fever,
cough, bronchitis, sore throat, headache and tiredness.
A common result of this infection is pneumonia (called “walking
pneumonia” which is a mild form of pneumonia that rarely
causes hospitalization). Middle ear infections can also
result from this bacteria. Symptoms usually begin 2-3 weeks after
exposure and usually develop slowly over 2-4 days. Symptoms may
persist from a few days to more than a month. Treatment
with antibiotics is very effective. Mycoplasm is a common
bacteria and most people recover without any treatment.
Two very basic measures that can help prevent the spread
of any respiratory illness are to cover your mouth and nose when sneezing and
coughing, and to practice good hand washing techniques. We are emphasizing
these measures at school and are looking for your help in supporting them at
home.
In regards to the mycoplasma infection, treatment should
be sought especially for symptoms that indicate “walking pneumonia” which
include: fever, cough and shortness of breath. Mycoplasma very
rarely results in illnesses such as meningitis/encephalitis. Seek
prompt, urgent medical care if you see symptoms of meningitis/encephalitis,
including moderate to severe headache, disorientation or confusion, fever,
and neck stiffness.
As always, please feel free to call me for any questions
or concerns. Also, please remember to report any significant
illnesses to the school.
CHARACTER ED…
