School Committee Seeks Community Subcommittee Members

The South Kingstown School Committee is accepting applications from community members to serve on two subcommittees.  The School Committee recently revised its by-laws to include community members on its two standing subcommittees: Accountability and Professional Development.  The by-laws now call for each subcommittee to include three members of the School Committee and two members of the community.  The charge of each subcommittee is described below.

The school committee shall have a professional development subcommittee.  The subcommittee shall be charged with the responsibility to:

á      Design, initiate, and evaluate professional development plans and practices including coaching and mentoring.

á      Engage the community in determining the professional development needs of the School Committee.

á      Share the learning of the School Committee with the community.

The Accountability Sub-Committee shall report to the School Committee on performance, oversight and evaluation of the school district.  The sub-committee shall:

á      Attend to performance reports and evaluations of educational effectiveness.

á      Engage the community in assessing the appropriateness of the goals and measures of the accountability system.

á      Share the results of the accountability system with the community.

á      In addition, the sub-committee shall serve as the audit committee.

The work of the sub-committee will focus on developing answers to three key questions:

1.     How well are students in the school system doing?

2.     How well is the school district supporting learning and achievement?

3.    How well is the school district managed?

Applications may be sent to the office of the superintendent up until Friday, November 14 at 307 Curtis Corner Road or emailed to rhicks@skschools.net, and will be reviewed by the School Committee once the newly elected members begin service.  Questions may be directed to the superintendent.
