Reading Standard 1: Print-Sound Code E1d (using phonics cues)

Students will develop an understanding of the print-sound code.

By the end of Grade 1, studentÕs phonemic awareness should be fully consolidated.  The ability to segment, blend and manipulate each of the sounds in words should be developed.  (Primary Literacy Standards, p. 96)  They will know regular sound Ð letter correspondence and use it to effectively decode regular one and two syllable words, use onset and rhymes to create new words, and recognize about 150 high frequency words they encounter in their reading.  (See Appendix for sample lists.)

Phonemic Awareness: the ability to hear and say separate sounds (phonemes); segmenting and blending sounds.

By the end of Grade 1, students will be expected to:

á      Separate the sounds by saying each sound aloud (/c/-/a/-/t/) as beginning, middle and ending sounds are identified

á      Blend separately spoken phonemes to make a meaningful word

á      Replace the beginning or ending sound to form new words  (cat, rat)

á      Identify the middle sound of a word

á      Add phonemes to the beginning of words (add /f/ to lap to get flap)

á      Delete phonemes at the beginning of words (delete /p/ in part to get art)

á      Hear syllable breaks in words

Phonemic Awareness/Phonics

Students will be introduced to and begin to understand the following:

á      Beginning Ð middle Ð end consonants and double consonants (ff, zz, ck, ll, ss, tt, dd, nn)

á      Consonant blends ( -l, -r, s- )

á      Consonant digraphs (sh, th, ch, wh, tch, qu)

á      Short vowels

á      Long vowels with silent e

á      Long vowel digraphs (oa, ee, ea, ai)

á      Base words and word endings (-s, -ed, -ing, -er, -es, est)

á      Regular plurals (-s)

á      Rhyming words (onsets and rimes)

á      Phonograms

In addition exposure should occur for:

á      Compound words

á      Contractions ( Ôd, Ôll, nÕt, Ôre, Ôs, Ôve)

á      Synonyms and antonyms

á      R controlled vowels ( ar, er, ir, or, ur )

á      Y at the end of words (funny, sky)

á      Vowel diphthongs (oy, oi, ay, ow, ie, igh, oo)

á      Variant vowels (all)

á      Hard and soft c and g

á      Inflectional endings

-       Doubling final consonants

-       Dropping final e

-       Changing y to i

Reading Words:

By the end of Grade 1, students will be expected to:

á      Know the regular letter-sound correspondences and use this to recognize or effectively decode regularly spelled one and two syllable words

á      Use onsets and rimes to create new words that include blends and digraphs

á      Recognize about 150 high frequency words they encounter in reading.  These words are never taught in isolation but occur as a result of repeated readings and word solving techniques.  The students may or may not master the words presented on the suggested list, however by the end of grade 1 about 150 words should be recognized by all students. (See Appendix for sample lists and word wall lists

*The above skills re those used in the Harcourt Collections series and in the Primary Literacy Standards

Reading Standard 2: Getting the Meaning

E1c (from informational text)  E1d (by showing accuracy and fluency in oral reading)  E3b, E5a, E1b (by discussion)

By the end of Grade 1, students should begin to read with fluency and stamina.

Accuracy and Fluency

á      By the end of Grade 1, students will be expected to read books independently (91% or above accuracy) that are new to them but have been previewed at Level I. (See Book Level Equivalence Chart in Appendix)

á      By the end of Grade 1, students will be expected to read aloud using fluent intonation, appropriate pauses,  and emphasizes the structure of the sentence and meaning of the text.

á      Students will use cues of punctuation including commas, periods, question marks, and quotation marks to obtain meaning and read fluently.

á      By the end of Grade 1, students will be expected to sustain independent reading for increasingly longer periods of time.

á      Recognize the first 150 high frequency sight words. (See Appendix)

Self-Monitoring and Self-Correcting:

By the end of Grade 1, students will be expected to monitor their reading for accuracy and sense and use successful strategies to solve reading problems.  (Primary Literacy Standards,  p. 102)

Students will be expected to:

á      Use picture clues

á      Use visual memory for sight words
